In science we have been studying Antarctica. One of the features of Antarctica is the extreme winds. Speeds of up to 320km/h have been recorded making Antarctica inDouglas Mawson’s immortal words, ‘the home of the blizzard’. The students have been making anemometers to measure wind speed using readily available materials.
A little while ago we were also studying the seasons how it is that in different hemispheres one day can be long and another short, or in the case of the poles 24 hr dark and 24 hr light. Students created their own model world complete with two people (Adam and Eve) to observe using a lamp how the tile of the Earth affects day length and seasons.
Most recently we have been investigating the effect of salinity on the freezing point of water. It is amazing to see the effect small amounts of salt have on the properties of water in the frozen south.
