‘No man is an island, entire of itself.’ This line comes from a short yet impactful poem by John Donne describing human connection. It is something I have said in Business Studies every year for the last 10 years and it describes perfectly the syllabus dot point of interdependence.
The idea of interdependence is that all parts of a business work together and rely on each other in order to achieve their individual goals. It is one of my favourite concepts to teach as it shows students that no matter what area of a business they will end up working in they are not in it alone and shouldn’t isolate themselves and hope to achieve the bigger picture. The goal is not able to be completed by you alone but through a complex web of people working together.
Interdependence also has a great personal connection. It shows that by ourselves we are good but when we surround ourselves with others we are perfect. It prioritises community and collaboration as well as the need to access support throughout your life. We are made whole through relying on others. It shows us that in any circumstance there are people who have been there, are there or are willing to be there through all things.
This weekend we have celebrated the wonderful Mum’s in our lives and recognised the work, time and effort they put into making our world great. They are the cheerleaders, the drill sergeants, the caretakers and so much more. They are one part of a whole team of people placed in our lives to lean on, wrestle ideas with and seek advice. When we stop and look around the number of people we can turn to in order to ensure connection is larger than we think.
This week take the time to appreciate the people in your life. Reach out and connect. Add more to your circle and be more for those who consider you a support. I hope this team mentality is something your children/our students see as we all work together to help them receive a quality education and make some awesome memories!
Have a wonderful week.
